Description

Do you wish to introduce your camper to eco-responsible nutrition while moving? Let’s go Peter is the ideal tool for you. Help Peter the Pepper discover food in three different ways!

Start by reading the glossary to help you with the concepts of eco-responsible foods. Then introduce your youth to the principles of source, processing, and waste. Ask your group questions to help them think and to make sure they understand the difference between the three concepts.

Then, present a food and ask them to tell you if the food is 100% eco-friendly or not. A food gets 1 point every time it’s eco-responsible. For example, a food that grows in Quebec, is unprocessed and has no waste accumulates 3 points (one point in each category). The young people must assign points to the food presented, then go to one of the three zones defined according to the number of points accumulated. If the food has 3 points the children must actively move in the green zone, if 2 points are accumulated they will have to go to the yellow zone and finally 0-1 points in the red zone.

Remind them that if a food is in the red category, it doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be eaten. It’s a food to be consumed less frequently for the health of the earth. There is no good or bad food, it’s all about balance.

Goal(s)

Discover and raise awareness among young people about eco-responsible food in a fun and active way!

Tips and tricks

These concepts can be a bit complicated so make sure that all your youth understand the instructions. Do a few games before integrating active travel. Once your group has assimilated the game, you can add moves and variations.

Required material(s)

  • Food sheets with answers (appendix)
  • 3 coloured objects (green, yellow, red) to delimit the areas (ex. hoops, cones)

Let’s have a chat!

Here are subjects to discuss with your campers before and after the activity. Ask them questions to see what they learnt.

  • Source: Have you visited a farm close to home? If so, what foods did you find there? Can you name any foods that are grown far from here?
  • Processing: Can someone tell me what processed food is? Can you name examples of processed foods? How are apples processed?
  • Waste: Have you noticed that certain grocery store products are more packaged than others ? Can you name a few products that are over-packaged? What foods are available for purchase without packaging?

Variations

  • Use fresh produce or pictures of other foods.
  • Ask the campers to locate the source country on a world map.
  • Use a larger space and perform more complex movements or use a path.
  • If your campers are older, have them present the activity to a younger group of campers.
