Description

Do you want to raise awareness about screen use and its negative effects among your campers? Are they very creative and enjoy funny stories? Here is a tool that will help you encourage their imagination while discussing a topic that interests them.

Create a story with your group that humorously describes the life of a screen-addicted troll. Make sure to set the context: they need to create a story about a screen-addicted troll. Taking turns, each child can say a sentence to continue the story. For younger campers, do this activity verbally. For older ones, invite each child to write their sentence on a piece of paper; this will allow them to keep writing, even during the summer!

Goal(s)

This activity addresses how to use screens and the internet appropriately, as well as the difficulties one can have maintaining control. It also allows campers to demonstrate their creativity by inventing a story about a screen-addicted troll

Tips and tricks

Do you have video game players in your group? Replace the troll with a character they know well, and they’ll likely have more imagination for the story!

For an extra challenge, encourage your campers to incorporate one of their favorite hobbies into the story. For example, if a camper enjoys dancing, they should find a way to make the character dance.

Required material

Optional :

  • paper
  • pencils

Let’s have a chat!

Here are subjects to discuss with your campers before and after the activity. Ask them questions to see what they learnt.

Here’s a list of subjects : Reflection, creativity, cooperation

  • Do you know any tricks that can help you stay in control when it comes to screens?
  • Why is it important to pay attention to our internet and screen use?
  • Why do you use screens? Do you think you could use them less?

Variants

Do you have a group with lots of energy? Ask them to create a performance or animation that goes along with the story.

Did they enjoy inventing their own story? You can create stories on other topics as well.

Other informations

Use the introduction to talk about healthy internet use and the impacts of excessive use. Use the troll to illustrate this with your group. For example: My troll spends most of its time on screens. He isolates himself and doesn’t see his friends much. However, when my troll uses screens appropriately, he manages his time better, allowing him to see his friends and learn about topics he’s interested in on the internet.

Continue their reflection on the topic with other PAUSE Challenge activities, like offline Pac-Man.
