Description
Your Are the Hero is an object race that gets your young people moving as a team. The goal of the game is to get the items from bins of mixed material and bring them back in empty bins to classify them into categories.
As these are your young people, the heroes of this game, they are the ones who choose the category they want to play for at the beginning of the game! A young person who wants to play for the “yellow” category would then have the objective of collecting yellow items from the bins of equipment and bring them back as quickly as possible.
Goal(s)
This activity motivates young people to engage in a variety of motor activities by allowing them to choose their own play world. In the form of a matching game, the young people must sort the material into categories and complete active challenges to fill up their bins as quickly as possible.
Tips and tricks
- To ensure the smooth running of the game, you can ask your young people to do a secret vote (with their eyes closed, by a show of hands) to find out which young people want to play in which category before launching the game. This will allow to reduce attempts at cheating and to assess in advance the proportions in which your young people want to be divided.
- After playing a few games, don’t hesitate to change the categories to avoid the young people to choose the same themes. You can also change the layout of the space and the active challenges to make the game more complex!
- To install your activity, make sure you have material in similar quantities for each theme so that the race is fair for every team. To place your game space, refer to the images in the tool. If you don’t have bins to put the equipment in, you can take hoops to delimit the different spaces.
Required material
- 10 bins to put the equipment in (it can be hoops, cones, dancing ropes, or something else to delimit small areas)
- At least 25 items of various materials (there must be the same number of items for each category)
Let’s have a chat!
Here are subjects to discuss with your campers before and after the activity. Ask them questions to see what they learnt.
- What was your favorite active challenge?
- What was the most difficult challenge?
- Did you like being able to make your own choices in the game?
Variant(s)
- Not enough equipment? Don’t panic! You can use colored cardboard, prints or draw pictures to replace the objects.
- Don’t hesitate to vary the categories. These can be colours, themes (e.g. DIY, tennis, etc.) or shapes or sizes. Each bin of shuffled materials will have to be associated with an active challenge to complete before picking up an item. For example, in front of a bin, the kids could be asked to do ten jumping jacks and in front of another, five frog jumps.
