Description
Your camp is organizing a week themed around movies? Are you passionate about films and series and want to explore this theme while keeping your campers active? This activity is for you!
Gather your campers and pose a riddle to them. For example, I can cheer you up and entertain you. The correct answer is the film category ‘comedy’.” Ask your campers to perform the required movement (e.g., crab walk) using the giant remote control. Then, they should stop at the poster corresponding to the correct category and shout “Found it!” so everyone gathers in the same place. Afterward, initiate a discussion with them about the movie poster.
To conduct this activity, you will only need the giant remote control, a list of riddles, and movie posters (see attached PDF).
Next, print or create the movie posters and place them in different locations so that the campers can move actively from one to another while answering the riddles.
This resource was developed in collaboration with Capsana.
Goal(s)
The objective of Remote Control Race is to introduce campers to different forms of actives movements while having fun. Crab walks, jumping, running, and much more. This also encourages them to be active outside of a sports context and learn to enjoy being active. They will also get to learn about different movie categories and enhance their general knowledge.
Tips and tricks
Make a giant remote control (see photo) to control movements during the activity. This will create a WOW effect among the campers. You can also organize an activity with them to build it!
If you have limited space, you can choose movements that work well over short distances, such as frog jumps, crawling on the ground, walking backward on all fours, etc. Bring out your most creative ideas to vary the movements.
Required material
- Displays from the remote control or remote control that you have made
- List of riddles
- Movie posters
Let’s have a chat
Here are subjects to discuss with your campers before and after the activity. Ask them questions to see what they learnt.
- What was your favorite movement?
- Did you know all these film categories ?
- What is your favorite film category ?
- How do you feel when you move like a frog, jumping, or running?
Variant(s)
- If you want to vary your activity, create your own questions.
- Choose series or movies to guess based on the age of your group.
- Invite older participants to create riddles for younger ones.
- Ask your campers to choose the type of movement they want to do to engage them in the activity.
- If your camp focuses on art, ask the counselor to create the remote control with their youth.
